Environmental education, community development and economic and social sustainability in Isla Mujeres Quintana Roo, Mexico

Abstract

The municipality of Isla Mujeres in Mexico, during the last 40 years has increased its tourist activity and this has modified its environmental, social and economic environment presenting problems of super population, regulation of resources and pollution of its different spaces, in response was generated An environmental education project that makes the population aware of the different problems that the municipality faces, however, to make the project viable and have access to economic funds, it is necessary to measure the impact that environmental education has on the population. Therefore, it was proposed as a general objective in this document to determine the economic and social indicators that measure the benefit of imparting environmental education to a locality. The Theory of Sustainable Development is taken as a theoretical basis to develop the methodology following the precepts of environment, society and economy raised United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization by (UNESCO), adapting it to the context of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, which is the case study. An exploratory type research is developed on the measurement of indicators. A search for social and economic indicators that measure the impact of the environmental education given to the locality is carried out. Among the main findings is the proposal of variables and the databases that publish at the municipal level information required for the processing of data of the indicators, as well as the systematization of their calculation.
