Public and Private Basic Education in Mexico: Implications for Socioeconomic Level

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between public or private basic education and the socioeconomic level achieved by an individual in Mexico. The methodology used is an ordered logit since the dependent variable has seven socioeconomic levels. It is controlled for variables such as gender, parental education, marital status, and family background. Using the ESRU-EMOVI 2017 Survey, the results indicate that attending a private institution in basic education is associated with a lower probability of being in the lowest socioeconomic levels and a higher probability of reaching the highest levels. In addition, gender disparities are found since women are less likely to get the highest level.
