Partido de Mérida, Historical Demography, Public Health, Ricardo Manuel Wan MoguelAbstract
Demografía, Medicina y Salud Pública en el partido de Mérida, Yucatán, México (1874-1901), published by El Colegio de Michoacán, is the result of the author’s doctoral thesis. The research rightly responds to the urge to complement the regional historiography, already nourished by many works that analyse the Mexican southeast from the perspective of the history of medicine and public health, with a serial and statistical study that is frame within the well-defines methodological parameters of the “historical demography”. Its aim is to examine the daily and socially differentiated mortality of the population of partido de Mérida at the end of the 19th century. It pays special attention to the epidemic and endemic diseases that were among the main causes of death at the time, as well as to the institutions in charge of mitigating them.
