Abstract

The book El invierno social llega a su fin. Las izquierdas frente al resurgir campesino, 1959-1965, is a work that adds to a historiography that in recent years has been growing on the subject of the left in Mexico during the second half of the 20th century. In this case, authors Jaime Ortega and Juan de la Fuente narrate a process that has not been discussed in depth, which is the relationship of the peasantry with the various lefts in Mexico and how peasants, as a social sector, became one of the centres of the theoretical and political discourse of the lefts in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Mexico. Therefore, as the authors mention, the aim of the book is to trace the way in which peasant mobilisation reappeared in the discourse and practice of the various expressions of the Mexican political left at the time (1959-1965). Under this idea, we can say that the book proposes a journey through a question: In what way did the left in Mexico, during the period from 1959 to 1965, discuss the role of the peasantry and its capacity for mobilisation as a centrifugal force in the transformation of society?
