Abstract

The rise and decline of the repartimiento system in New Spain followed a distinct trajectory. While in most territories it was a limited practice, in the province of Oaxaca it reached a high degree of penetration, to the point of being considered the driving force of the colonial economy until the early decades of the 19th century. But what is the repartimiento? What were the causes and consequences of its adoption among Indigenous communities? What mechanisms were used to implement it? Why analyze the Tehuantepec rebellion? Did it affect the social and economic structure of these communities?
