Abstract

Clientelism represents one of the main challenges to the consolidation of functional democracies in Latin America, affecting political representation, citizen participation, and institutional legitimacy. This article examines the phenomenon of clientelism from a theoretical and comparative perspective, using the approaches of Dahl (1989), Habermas (1996), Bourdieu (1977), to analyze how power structures shape democratic quality. Through a comparative analysis between Latin America and the Nordic countries, the article identifies key differences in political representation, civic culture, and institutional trust. It argues that clientelism functions not only as an electoral strategy but also as a symbolic mechanism of domination that perpetuates structural inequalities. Finally, it proposes strategies to strengthen democracy in the Latin American context.
