Origin and Destination of Central and South American Migration. A Sample from Its Transit Through Sinaloa

Since the middle of the twentieth century, Mexico has been a transit territory for various migratory flows from Central, South America and Caribe that use the country as a transit territory to enter the United States irregularly. According to the records of the National Migration Institute, citizens of Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador currently constitute 67% of the total of those housed in the migratory stations (INM, 2024), who represent the majority of the undocumented human mobility in transit through Mexico towards the United States.Through a quantitative and qualitative methodology, this article focused on knowing the origin, destination and journey of undocumented people as they passed through the city of Mazatlan, Sinaloa. In addition, we sought to know the socioeconomic and demographic profile of its participants, as well as to know what adversities they face in their journey through Mexican territory. This article is part of a broader investigation that was published in 2018 (Lizárraga, 2018), and which we return to with some data updated to the year 2024.
