Sexual Harassment in The Academic and Scientific Workplace: A literature Review

Abstract

This article provides a review of existing literature on harassment and sexual harassment in the academic and scientific workplace. An inductive review methodology was employed, encompassing scientific articles and audio-visual material from various countries, languages, and databases addressing the subject. The data collection technique used was inductive review, with a focus on scientific articles and dissemination materials produced between 1995 and 2023. The objective was to comprehend the impact of harassment and sexual harassment on women working in the academic and scientific fields. The results revealed factors contributing to these aggressions, such as institutional tolerance and the masculinization of positions of power within institutions. Additionally, it was observed that sexual harassment has an effect leading to alienation and isolation, distancing women from meaningful participation in scientific projects and hindering their professional development.
