Summary of the Sinaloan Identity
Keywords:
Identidad, narcocultura, violencia, Estilo de vidaAbstract
The identity that distinguishes the inhabitants of Sinaloa is partially shaped by a fusion of Mexico’s deep-rooted traditions, where the northern barbarity clings to violent practices, intertwined with attitudes of arrogance and power fostered and amplified through cultural industries. These industries have glorified violence, manifested through attitudes and actions associated with easy success: wearing expensive designer clothing, flaunting accessories like luxury watches, driving high-end cars, and leading an ostentatious lifestyle that defines narco-culture. Narco-culture, as a regional hallmark, permeates all social spheres in this state. It can be identified across various levels, strata, and even social achievements. Significant expressions laden with symbolic displays of power, intimidation, and control are easily recognizable in the way people dress and the ostentatious use of accessories. These regional traits reflect values that have shaped a collective imagination rooted in local practices. Over time, these have transcended into global representations through tastes and lifestyles that define the attributes of politicians, teachers, entrepreneurs, workers, and young people who have constructed a localized worldview.
