Current Status of Streptococcosisin Tilapia in Colombia
Keywords:
Streptococcus agalactiae, tilapia, Biosecurity, Aquaculture, ColombiaAbstract
Streptococcosis is one of the most significant bacterial diseases in aquaculture worldwide, caused primarily by species of the genus Streptococcus. In farmed fish, especially in tilapia production, it has become a recurring health problem in intensive farming systems, resulting in high mortality rates and significant economic losses; this poses a risk to the sustainability of aquaculture production and raises concerns about public health and the balance of aquatic ecosystems. This review presents the current status of streptococcosis in tilapia in Colombia, describing the different strains of Streptococcus agalactiae identified in the country and the prevention strategies reported in the literature, while considering their advantages and/or limitations in aquaculture production.
