Experience of Survivors of Acute Myocardial Infarction

Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is characterized by cellular necrosis in cardiac tissue, obstructing blood circulation to the heart muscle. AMI morbidity and mortality rates show an upward trend both globally and nationally. However, AMI survivors face a complex process of recovery and adaptation. This research focuses on exploring the experiences of AMI survivors. Methodology: Qualitative case study approach based on hermeneutic phenomenology was used to understand the experiences of AMI survivors. Informed consent was granted to each participant, respecting international and national documents to protect the data. In-depth interviews were used to collect the experience, and an artisanal analysis of the information was carried out by macro and microthematic areas. Results: Two male AMI survivors, residents of the state of Guanajuato participated in the study. They described their post-infarction experience, highlighting family overprotection that limits their autonomy, emotional transformation toward gratitude, fear of relapse, and lifestyle changes to prevent future cardiac events. Conclusion: This study provides in-depth insight into the lived experience of AMI survivors, where fear of relapse motivates them to take care of themselves.
