Meanings attributed to the use of breast prostheses in women who survived breast cancer

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) is a chronic, rapidly progressing disease that causes suffering to the sufferer and their family. Its treatment alters physical appearance, affecting personal development and quality of life. Women use various types of prostheses to correct the appearance of the missing breast. Some are designed and made by medical brands using materials such as silicone, while others are handcrafted using readily available materials such as cotton and sponge. Objective: To describe the meaning attributed to the use of breast prostheses in women who are breast cancer survivors. Methodology: A non-experimental study with a qualitative design based on the theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism. It was aimed at women over 18 years of age who were BC survivors and who had used breast prostheses after mastectomy for a minimum period of 6 months. Results: 7 participants; ages 28 to 70. Main category: Meanings attributed to the use of breast prostheses in women who are breast cancer survivors. Subcategories: Losing a part of yourself, the breast is never recovered, a different person, an opportunity to support. Conclusions: Mastectomy leaves deep wounds in women regarding themselves, their partners, and their perceptions in society. Using a breast prosthesis allows them to minimize the feeling of being "incomplete" in addition to being a facilitating element of transcendence in the redefinition of their image, their person, and even a facilitating element of support among their peers.
