Validity of the contraceptive behavior scale in Mexican adolescents and young adults

Introduction: Valid and reliable measurement of contraceptive behavior among Mexican adolescents and young adults is essential for designing evidence-based interventions; however, there are few instruments adapted and validated for this population. The objective was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the contraceptive behavior scale among Mexican adolescents and young adults. Method: A methodological study was conducted with 199 sexually active adolescents and young adults of both sexes. A back-translation process was carried out using direct translation, synthesis, retranslation, and expert review. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were applied, in addition to Cronbach's alpha to assess reliability. Results: The EFA revealed a unidimensional structure with factor loadings between 0.67 and 0.81. The CFA showed an acceptable goodness-of-fit index: χ²=22.306 (p<.001), χ²/df=4.461, GFI=0.957, AGFI=0.871, NFI=0.903, CFI=0.921, and SRMR=0.063; however, the RMSEA = 0.132 (90%CI = 0.079–0.190) was the only index that did not show an adequate fit. The scale demonstrated acceptable reliability, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of α=0.73. Conclusions: Although the RMSEA index did not indicate a good fit, the adapted version of the scale demonstrated acceptable construct validity, supported by the other goodness-of-fit index obtained. Furthermore, the instrument demonstrated adequate levels of reliability for assessing contraceptive behavior among Mexican adolescents and young adults. Its unidimensional structure and ease of administration make it a useful tool for research and the development of strategies aimed at promoting sexual and reproductive health.
