Abstract

Ambiguous, multifaceted, and contextual—this is how Varela
Juárez (2025) describes the definition commonly attributed to precarious
work. How should we understand precarious work today? In *Trabajo
precario y trata laboral: una perspectiva con incidencia en la realidad
mexicana* (2025), Varela Juárez explains that the existence of the precario
us worker in contemporary society must be understood in relation to the
accelerated development of productive forces, the hyper-mobility of c
apital flows, global communication, and competition regarding policies to
attract capital, as well as the informatization and automation of production
processes. This is a conceptually rich and contextually
grounded initiative. The work aims to provide
recommendations useful for identifying how precarious
work manifests in Mexico. Thus, the strength of the
proposal lies in linking the International Labour
Organization’s (ILO) international recommendation
frameworks with the Mexican legal framework and,
subsequently, with insights into the operational reality of
labor relations in Mexico. To chart this course, the author finds
it necessary to nuance the concepts of labor precarity, labor
trafficking, and labor flexibility within the Mexican context.
This process entailed a significant conceptual effort—including
a philosophical discussion on justice, decency, and
dignity—making the resulting dialogue of interest to both
academia and the general public.
