The objective of this paper is to compare the evolution of competitiveness in Latin America, MERCOSUR with the OECD in order to detect the fields of opportunities for Mexico using data from the World Economic Forum in particular The Global Competitiveness Report from 2001 to 2017. Through an observational methodology and comparative results show that the global competitiveness index of Mexico has remained in a constant range from 2001 to 2017, a situation that does not yet demonstrate the benefits of the structural reforms implemented. Comparing with the OECD members, Mexico usually occupies the last places in several pillars. In Latin America, the country in education ranks 11 out of a total of 19. The pillars of opportunity are: institutions, considering corruption, impunity, organized crime, influence peddling; Education and training, considers basic education, higher education and training. Problems with training for the current and future workforce by companies. The pillars of improvement are: macroeconomic environment and market size. Finally, Mexico should boost growth by rethinking the priority of public spending on infrastructure, training, health and poverty reduction, taking advantage of the institutional reforms realized.
