Abstract

Writer, humorist, and storyteller Fran Lebowitz stars in a miniseries titled "Let's Suppose New York Is a City," produced by Netflix and directed by Martin Scorsese. In this miniseries, Lebowitz shares with Scorsese the changes that have taken place in New York City from the 1970s to the present day. Throughout the documentary, she reveals, through her own experiences, how the city has been evolving. She focuses on reflecting on the elements that have led New York City to become one of the most cutting-edge and innovative metropolises. However, what made it one of the most desirable cities to live in and visit is also what could lead to its decline: overcrowding, the lack and rising cost of housing, the high cost of living, transportation challenges, segregation, social disparities, and insecurity. However, she maintains that the bustling, chaotic, and complex nature of the city is what makes it attractive. Therefore, when Scorsese asks her why she continues to live in New York City despite all the problems she identifies and describes, she replies that there is no better city to live in.
