Abstract

Obstetric violence is a problem that can be difficult to measure due to its lack of a legal definition. Other investigations have estimated that 1 in 3 women suffered obstetric violence in her most recent labor and delivery. (Castro & Frías, 2019) This article aims to create a panorama of obstetric violence in Mexico. It is a quantitative study that utilizes information obtained via open sources and a series of three virtual questionnaires with a total of 79 participants, it compares reported practices with recommended practices, analyzes the experiences of women who received medical attention during their labor and delivery in one of the hospitals in Mazatlán from 2018 to 2023 and compares the language used by both healthcare professionals and female healthcare users. It concludes that there exists an excess of surgical intervention in labor and delivery in Mazatlán and that the informed consent of female healthcare users is not being respected. This implies that obstetric violence is the day to day in Mazatlán’s public hospitals.
