Enhancing spiritual well-being in older adults
Keywords:
Spirituality, Older adult, Health promotion, GerontologyAbstract
Spirituality refers to the inner dimension of a person that seeks to give meaning to life and connect with something sacred, which is particularly significant in the final stage of life. In old age, spirituality enables individuals to integrate their life experiences and find transcendence through the legacy they leave behind. It also serves as a valuable resource for coping with the losses and challenges characteristic of this stage, offering comfort and inner strength. Spirituality is not necessarily linked to religion; it may be rooted in personal beliefs, meaningful objects, or relationships. Gerontology professionals should promote opportunities for older adults to engage with their spirituality, through activities such as reflection, meditation, and artistic expression. Empathy and active listening are essential to support this process, helping individuals to find meaning and purpose. The integration of such spiritually oriented practices contributes to the emotional and physical well-being of older adults.
