One of the principles of the circular economy is to maximize the use of all resources and avoid their final disposal without prior utilization. For example, sludge generated in the filters of an aquaponic system can be used as a biofertilizer, providing essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to agricultural soils. The objective of this study was to determine whether residual sludge generated in an aquaponic system could be used as a soil amendment for radish cultivation.
Six different soil treatments were prepared by mixing residual sludge with natural soil at varying proportions to obtain different levels of organic matter content: 2.5%, 3%, 9%, 15%, 21%, and 27%. According to the results, treatments containing lower percentages of organic matter (2.5%, 3%, and 9%) showed higher radish seed germination rates and better plant growth.
The utilization of residual sludge generated in aquaponic systems is of great importance because it contains high levels of organic matter and nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which can be effectively used in agricultural production.
