Illegal mining: A threat to Ecuador's comprehensive security and sustainable development

This research examines illegal mining as a significant threat to Ecuador’s comprehensive security, focusing on the existing productive enclaves that have led to criminal governance in the territory. These governance structures arise from the convergence of illegal mining with other crimes, including transnational crime. The Ecuadorian state has classified illegal mining as a threat due to the formation of geographical spaces under the control of criminal powers, where multiple illicit activities converge. These hotspots integrate into the illegal mining pro-duction chain, involving crimes such as arms, ammunition, and explosives trafficking, drug trafficking, money laundering, human trafficking, and fuel smuggling. Furthermore, there is systematic corruption involving private actors, indigenous communities, and criminal orga-nizations, which generates significant economic gains for these groups. This phenomenon severely impacts the country’s economy and sustainable development, compromising its sta-bility and comprehensive security.
