Ciudad Mante. Origins of an agro-city of workers and merchants, 1920-1940

This article examines the rise of Ciudad Mante as a significant urban center in southern Tamaulipas, Mexico during the first half of the 20th century. The analysis aims to add complexity to the understanding of agro-cities that emerged in the northern region of Mexico, particularly those influenced by the agro-industry. The cultivation and processing of sugar cane played a crucial role in the growth and development of Ciudad Mante, leading to population settlement and the establishment of a city. Additionally, a group of merchants organized in the local National Chamber of Commerce emerged and engaged in negotiations with state political authorities, while also holding positions in local politics. The article emphasizes the diversity of social actors involved in Ciudad Mante's development, highlighting a perspective often overlooked in the economic and business history approach.
