Job induction programs for new nurses: a systematic review
Keywords:
program, nursing, clinical competence.Abstract
Introduction: Nursing staff who have just entered the workforce require specific skills for nursing care. The objective was to analyze empirical evidence on induction programs for newly graduated nursing professionals who enter the workforce to improve clinical competence, decision-making, critical thinking and/or clinical judgment.
Materials and methods: The study was guided by the question: What induction programs for newly graduated nursing professionals who enter the workforce have shown improvement in clinical competence (knowledge, attitude, skill), critical thinking and/or clinical judgment?. The search was conducted under the consideration of the Cochrane Manual and the PRISMA statement in databases such as EBSCO, Pubmed and Scielo. It was carried out with descriptors in Spanish and English using Boolean operators AND and OR in the period from 2014-2024. The evaluation of methodological quality was carried out with the JBI critical evaluation tool.
Results: Six quasi-experimental studies were selected that show the effectiveness of interventions or programs based on mentoring, simulation, knowledge transfer between peers and simulation with debriefing.
Discussion: It was shown that simulation and mentoring are the strategies that have shown the best results for the development of the competence of nursing professionals.
Conclusions: The scientific evidence analyzed will be useful for nursing professionals and authorities of health institutions that seek to improve the induction to the position and thus the quality of nursing care.
