Abstract

In his book Corridos tumbados, Valenzuela Arce (2023) explores how, within Mexico's already vast "corrido tradition," a new wave of drug-trafficking corridos has emerged. Their commercial success extends beyond their places of origin, encompassing a complex circulation within the dynamics of what Castells (2009) refers to as the network society, where the everyday use of microprocessors and internet-based remote connections are central. Thus, these so-called "corridos tumbados" and "corridos bélicos" (war corridos), whose exponents include "Peso Pluma," Natanael Cano, Gabito Ballesteros, and Fuerza Regida, have burst onto the music scene, social media, and everyday spaces, transcending geographical boundaries: they are heard in Culiacán, Los Angeles, the Tepito street market, and a Tapachula bus station.
