Diagnosis in the mirror

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. This DNA virus infects epithelial cells in various mucous membranes and skin surfaces. The most common route of transmission is through sexual contact, which is why there is often a stigma surrounding people who suffer from this disease. However, other forms of transmission also exist, such as contact with fomites or during childbirth from mother to child. This infection is strongly associated with the development of several types of cancer, mainly cervical cancer. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are of utmost importance.
This artwork represents the emotional impact that a diagnosis of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can have on women. Through the image of a woman facing a mirror, it aims to convey how the diagnosis can darken the way a person sees herself. The reflection shows her own image darkened, with diagnostic tests, clinical results, and representations of the virus standing out the most, symbolizing how the diagnosis can overshadow her personal identity.
The dark background and the hands pointing from within the mirror represent the stigma, social judgment, and fear of rejection that many patients face. The woman embraces herself, reflecting vulnerability, but also the need for self-love, acceptance, and hope, cause not everything is lost after receiving a diagnosis.
Through this piece, the importance of early HPV diagnosis is highlighted, as well as the urgency of speaking about this disease without prejudice, promoting empathy, education, and social understanding for those affected by it.
