Abstract

Cirripeds, commonly known as barnacles, include an extraordinary subgroup: the rhizocephalans, highly specialized parasites that infect crustaceans, particularly crabs such as blue crabs. Among them, Loxothylacus texanus stands out for its complex life cycle and remarkable ability to profoundly transform its host. Unlike their sessile relatives with calcified shells, these parasites have lost that structure and developed an internal, root-like system that spreads throughout the host’s body, from which they absorb nutrients. The life cycle of L. texanus includes an internal (endoparasitic) phase and an external (ectoparasitic) phase, the latter visible as a reproductive sac attached to the host’s abdomen. This parasite manipulates the physiology and behavior of commercially important Gulf of Mexico crab species, such as Callinectes sapidus and Callinectes rathbunae, which are its common hosts. It causes parasitic castration, feminization of males, growth inhibition, and behavioral modifications, such as increased aggression or changes in grooming habits. Although it does not pose a direct risk to humans, its presence has economic implications by reducing the population of commercially viable crabs, since parasitized individuals are typically smaller and sterile. The study of L. texanus not only reveals an astonishing level of evolutionary specialization but also helps to better understand its ecological and economic effects on marine ecosystems. These parasitic cirripeds are a fascinating example of how nature can transform structures and functions to ensure survival at the expense of other organisms.
