A phenomenological interview experience regarding violence against older adults

Abstract

Old age is a stage of life in which vulnerability tends to increase. As a result, older adults may be exposed to various forms of violence. This phenomenon can be explored through qualitative approaches such as phenomenology, which enables a deeper understanding of the lived experience of violence. Phenomenological interviewing allows the phenomenon to emerge naturally; however, the process presents several challenges, both in terms of the setting in which it takes place and the emotional aspects involved. These require a sensitive and considered approach due to the complexity of the subject. This article presents the experience of conducting phenomenological interviews with older adults regarding situations of violence experienced in the domestic sphere. The interviews were conducted in an atmosphere of trust, which made it possible to uncover not only difficulties but also challenges and practical recommendations. The findings highlight the importance of respecting the dignity of the interviewees and ensuring a safe space in which they can share their experiences.
