Author Guidelines

Submission and Evaluation Process

Authors are invited to submit their work to the journal Ciencias del Mar UAS. All submitted manuscripts will undergo an initial editorial screening to determine whether they align with the journal's aims and scope. Manuscripts that meet these baseline requirements will be subjected to a double-blind peer review process to determine acceptance or rejection.

Author Responsibilities

  • Mandatory ORCID: It is essential that all authors have their ORCID identifier linked and updated in their platform profile. Manuscripts that do not include this information will not be processed.

  • Institutional Affiliation: Affiliations must be presented strictly across three levels: 1. Institution, 2. Department or Faculty, 3. Location (City and Country).

  • Bilingual Metadata: It is mandatory to enter the title, abstract, and keywords into the platform in both Spanish and English.

  • Ethics and Permissions: Authors must secure all necessary permissions for copyrighted material, obtain the consent of all co-authors, and receive approval from an ethics committee when applicable.

Manuscript Style and Formatting Guide

To ensure an expedited evaluation, all manuscripts must strictly comply with the following criteria:

  • Typography and Layout: 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1.5 line spacing. Margins: Left 3.5 cm, Right 2.5 cm, Top and Bottom 3.0 cm.

  • Numbering: Pages must be numbered in the bottom right margin. Mandatory: Continuous line numbering throughout the entire document (do not restart numbering on each page).

  • Scientific Nomenclature: Scientific names must appear in italics (no underlining). The full name must be used upon first mention; subsequently, the abbreviated genus may be used (e.g., C. virginica).

  • Tables and Figures: Tables must be in black and white (Roman numerals: Table I); figures may be in color or black and white (Arabic numerals: Figure 1). They must be embedded directly within the text where the author intends them to appear. High resolution is required for print quality.

  • Units: The International System of Units (SI) must be used exclusively.

Bibliographic References (APA Style, 7th Edition)

It is the author's responsibility to ensure an exact match between in-text citations and the final reference list. Any discrepancy will be grounds for immediate rejection during the initial review.

  • In-Text Citations: (Last Name, Year). For 2 to 5 authors, cite all authors the first time and use et al. subsequently. For 6 or more authors, use et al. from the very first mention.

  • Reference List: Only cited references will be accepted, arranged in alphabetical order. Mandatory Requirement: Include the DOI and a direct link to the publication on the line immediately following the reference. Dissertations/theses, conference presentations, and difficult-to-access technical reports are not accepted.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements:

  • Compliance with Guidelines and Formatting: The manuscript strictly complies with the guidelines for authors, including 12-point Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing, and continuous line numbering.

  • Originality: The work submitted is original, has not been previously published, and is not currently under consideration by any other journal.

  • Identification and Affiliation: All authors have a registered ORCID iD, and their institutional affiliation is structured across three levels (Institution, Department, City/Country).

  • APA 7th Edition References and DOIs: All references follow the APA 7th edition formatting guidelines and include their corresponding DOI with an active link.

  • Tables and Figures: Tables and figures are properly numbered, labeled, and embedded in the appropriate location within the text.

  • Legal Permissions: Explicit permission has been secured to publish all images, photographs, datasets, and any other copyrighted material included with this submission.

  • Bilingual Metadata: The title, abstract, and keywords are prepared and ready to be entered in both Spanish and English.

Research Article

  • Definition: Original research with analysis and conclusions supported by precise data.
  • Length: Maximum 30 pages (including tables, figures, and references).
  • Structure: Title (ES/EN), Authors (with ORCID and 3-level affiliation), Abstract (ES/EN, max. 200 words), Keywords (ES/EN), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion (with conclusion) and Literature cited.

Research Note

  • Definition: Short research, new records, or geographic range extensions.
  • Length: Maximum 12 pages.
  • Structure: Similar to the scientific article in an abbreviated form. Abstract of maximum 150 words and literature cited preferably not exceeding 10 citations.

Review Article

  • Definition: Analysis and synthesis of published information on a specific topic within marine sciences.
  • Length: Maximum 35 pages.
  • Structure: Title (ES/EN), Authors (with ORCID and affiliation), Abstract (ES/EN, max. 200 words), Introduction, Topic development, Discussion, Conclusion and Literature cited.

Once we receive the revised page proofs and the signed copyright transfer form, your manuscript will be ready for publication. We will send you the copyright transfer form shortly for you to sign and return to us.
