Abstract

The expansion of human settlements along coastal areas has led to a substantial increase in the use of non- iodegradable plastics, many of which are improperly discarded into the environment. Over time, these plastic wastes undergo weathering processes, resulting in the formation of microplastics and nanoplastics. The primary sources of these pollutants are anthropogenic activities occurring on the continental shelf and in oceanic environments. Today, the impacts of plastic pollution are evident in terrestrial and marine plants, food webs, and the accumulation of large artificial debris patches in the world's oceans. Addressing plastic debris has become an urgent priority to reduce and mitigate plastic pollution in marine ecosystems and to minimize its adverse effects on biota.
