Abstract

In this work, the variation of the parasite population was identified in plankton samples from natural infections of the mysidacean Metamysidopsis frankfiersi Hendrickx & Payán collected on Stone Island and Mazatlán Bay, Sinaloa. The objective of this study was to record the presence of the acanthocephalan parasite Rhadinorhynchus trachinoti Grano-Maldonado, Sereno-Uribe, Hernández-Payán, PérezPonce de León & García-Varela, 2024. The ecological parameters of infection were determined: prevalence, abundance, and average intensity in zooplankton samples. The parasite was found as a cystacanth (larval phase) in the cephalothorax of the mysidacean crustacean Metamysidopsis frankfiersi Hendrickx & Payán as its intermediate host. A total of 412 crustaceans were collected (154 males and 268 females), of which 3 males and 2 females were found
parasitized; with a prevalence of 1.21%, an abundance of 0.0121, and an average intensity of 1. In this work, Rhadinorhynchus trachinoti was recorded for the first time on Isla de la Piedra, in Mazatlán Sinaloa, and data on the population dynamics of the parasite were provided, which provides important data on the biology, biodiversity, and hosts involved in the parasite-host systems.
