Anthropometric indicators in primary school children: the case of southern Mexico

Introduction: Overweight and obesity in schoolchildren represent a major public health problem, particularly in southern Mexico. Objective: To determine the presence of overweight and obesity through anthropometric indicators in elementary school children in southern Mexico. Methodology: A cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted among primary school children aged 5 to 9 years in southern Mexico. Anthropometric measurements of weight and height were taken, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated based on age, weight, and height. Results: Females predominated, representing 49.3% of the sample, with a mean age of 7.3 years (SD = 32). A total of 57% of the schoolchildren had a BMI above the age-appropriate level, 4.2% had a BMI higher than expected for their age, and 8.4% had a weight above the expected range for their age. Conclusions: The results highlight the need to implement educational programs and targeted intervention strategies in the school setting to promote healthy eating habits and reduce the risk of chronic non-infectious diseases in this vulnerable student population.
