Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing public health problem, and a substantial proportion of patients require hemodialysis, a treatment associated with a high physical and emotional burden. Anxiety is one of the most frequent emotional disorders in this population, whereas alcohol consumption remains a relevant behavior in adults, although its study in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis is limited. Objective: To determine the relationship between anxiety symptoms and alcohol consumption in adult patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: A descriptive correlational cross-sectional study was conducted in a General Zone Hospital in Monterrey, Mexico. A total of 135 adult patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis were selected through stratified random sampling by sex. A personal data and alcohol-consumption prevalence form, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test were used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s chi-square test, and Spearman’s correlation were applied. Results: Mean age was 52.6 years (SD = 13.04). Minimal and mild anxiety levels predominated (74.8%). Women showed a higher proportion of moderate and severe anxiety. Alcohol consumption prevalence was low; lifetime and past-year consumption were higher in men. Only 6.7% showed non-hazardous drinking and no dependent or harmful consumption was identified. No significant correlation was found between anxiety and alcohol consumption (rs = -.06, p > .05). Conclusions: Low anxiety levels and low alcohol consumption predominated in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. No significant relationship was identified between both variables. Emotional-health assessment should be strengthened and future studies should explore additional psychosocial determinants.
