Parasite copepod associated with the hammerhead shark (Sphyrna sp.) in artisanal fishing zones of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico

Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna sp.) host a diverse assemblage of ectoparasitic copepods, yet records from the Mexican tropical Pacific remain scarce. As part of the project “Identification of parasites and pathogens in commercially important fish species from coastal areas of Sinaloa”, we examined specimens captured in Mazatlán Bay to document copedod diversity. Three sharks were obtained through artisanal fisheries, and their external surface, including fins, were macroscopically inspected for parasitic copedods. The collected specimens were processed at the CA-UAS-162 laboratory (Faculty of Marine Sciences, UAS) for taxonomic identification. Five genera were recorded: Caligus, Pandarus, Kroyeria, Nemesis, and Protodactylina. These findings expanding the current knowledge of ectoparasitic fauna associated with elasmobranchs in the southern Gulf of California.
