Publication Ethics and Best Practices
Ethics and Best Practices
1. Commitment to Integrity
At Revista Ciencias del Mar UAS (CIMAR UAS), we value and promote research integrity. We strictly discourage any form of unethical conduct by editors, reviewers, and authors. All contributions must be original and unpublished articles. By submitting a document to CIMAR UAS, compliance with the ethical publishing standards established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the CSE's White Paper on Promoting Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications is expected.
2. Plagiarism Detection and Originality
Originality is a fundamental pillar of our journal.
-
Definition of Plagiarism: Refers to taking and using another person's work (words, figures, data, or materials) without authorization and without providing proper attribution.
-
Self-plagiarism: Also known as duplicate or redundant publication; it involves re-publishing previously disseminated material without acknowledging the original source.
-
Procedure: We conduct an exhaustive review of manuscripts using digital similarity detection tools. If plagiarism is detected at any stage of the process, the manuscript will be rejected. If the article has already been published, a formal retraction will proceed. It is our ethical responsibility to notify the author's institution and other relevant entities in such cases.
3. Data Falsification and Fabrication
Data falsification (manipulation of data or processes) and fabrication (invention of results) are unacceptable behaviors. If such practices are detected, the corresponding authorities will be notified. This implies the rejection of the manuscript under review or, if already published, its immediate retraction to ensure the validity of the scientific content.
4. Ethics in Experimentation and Animal Welfare
We firmly support initiatives to minimize the use of animals in research and promote their ethical use under the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement).
-
Requirements: Authors conducting animal studies must provide the corresponding permits from their institutional bioethics committees or evidence of adherence to international standards.
-
References: We recommend consulting the guidelines of the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (2019) and the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (2015).
5. Responsibilities of Key Actors
-
Authors: Must guarantee that the data presented are real and that all individuals who contributed significantly are listed as co-authors.
-
Reviewers: Must declare any conflict of interest and treat manuscripts with strict confidentiality.
-
Editors: Must act objectively, ensuring a fair review based solely on scientific merit, without discrimination of any kind.
