Introduction: Breastfeeding is the ideal feeding process for infants during the first six months of life, as it promotes optimal nutritional status and health benefits. Proper knowledge of breastfeeding is crucial for effective breastfeeding. Objective: This study aimed to identify the breastfeeding knowledge of the medical, nursing, and nutritional health professionals of a second-level public hospital in Culiacán, Sinaloa. Material and methods. Quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The study included 70 health professionals from the Sinaloa Pediatric Hospital to whom the ECoLa breastfeeding knowledge questionnaire was applied during the period from November 2022 to November 2023
Results: Regarding the score of the level of knowledge about LM of the health professionals surveyed, 34 (48.6%) were very insufficient, 18 (25.7%) good, 14 (20%) insufficient, 4 (5.7%) excellent. The average response of our study population is 14.04/25 correct answers (CI 95% 12.89-15.18) categorized in the range of insufficient knowledge. The highest number of scores will be obtained in the academic category of neonatologists with an average of 18.77 (CI 95% 17.02-20.52) categorized in a good knowledge. Conclusion: These results show the need to establish strategies to increase breastfeeding knowledge among health staff and thus guarantee better care and support for breastfeeding mothers to meet the sustainable development goals established by the WHO for the year 2030.
