Between care and contradiction: motivations for tobacco use among nursing students

Introduction: tobacco use among nursing students represents a significant paradox for public health and professional training. Despite being future health professionals and being aware of smoking-related risks, a proportion of nursing students continue to smoke, suggesting motivations that extend beyond biomedical knowledge. Objective: to critically reflect on the motivations influencing tobacco use among nursing students, considering the university context, emotional processes, and the construction of professional identity. Development: based on the analysis of scientific literature, this essay examines tobacco use from a contextual and psychological perspective. It explores motivations related to emotional regulation, academic and clinical stress management, peer influence, and the normalization of smoking within university and healthcare environments. The gap between knowledge of tobacco-related harms and persistent smoking behavior is also discussed, highlighting the role of beliefs, expectations, and maladaptive coping strategies.Conclusion: tobacco use among nursing students emerges as a multifactorial phenomenon reflecting tensions between caring for others and self-care. Understanding these motivations provides a basis for rethinking prevention strategies that emphasize emotional well-being and coherence between professional training and personal health practices.
