Nursing care process in patients with anorexia nervosa

Abstract

Introduction: Eating disorders (ED) represent a type of serious psychobiological illness. Anorexia is related to a higher mortality than any other mental disorder. Objective: Implement a Nursing Care Process (PAE) based on Dorothea Orem's theory in patients with ED. Background: Anorexia can lead to premature death, commonly due to suicide or medical complications. Methodology: A PAE was carried out on a 16-year-old patient, referred from the outpatient clinic of a public psychiatric institution in Culiacan, Sinaloa. This process was carried out through five moments: the patient was identified. Next, it consisted of the collection of information. In the third moment, a care plan was formulated using the methodology proposed by the Permanent Commission of Nursing in Mexico, supported by the NANDA International references, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). The fourth covered the detailed explanation of the care process, and the fifth moment corresponded to the evaluation of the interventions. Interventions: Treating mental disorders through the Nursing Care Process has been beneficial for the improvement of the patient with Anorexia Nervosa. Main results: It was evident that the PAE was useful to guide the necessary interventions in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.
