Nomophobia, Doom Scrolling, and Their Impact on Students Academic Performance

Abstract

Introduction: Nomophobia, the irrational fear of being without a mobile phone, together with doom scrolling, the tendency to compulsively scroll through negative news on social media, are emerging phenomena in students' lives. These behaviors affect their mental health and, consequently, their academic performance. Objective: Analyze the combined impact of nomophobia and doom scrolling on students' academic performance, exploring their effects and proposing strategies to mitigate these impacts. Development: A review of recent studies found that continuous exposure to negative news and mobile phone dependency generate high levels of anxiety, stress, and lack of concentration. These conditions affect sleep quality and study time, leading to a significant decline in academic performance. Students who engage in doom scrolling and exhibit nomophobia are more likely to develop depressive symptoms and have difficulties managing their time, negatively impacting their academic performance. Conclusion: It is essential for educational institutions and mental health professionals to implement awareness programs and intervention strategies to reduce the negative impact of these behaviors on students. Promoting healthy technology habits can improve well-being and academic performance.
