HIV knowledge and sexual attitudes of teenagers from northern Mexico

Introduction: HIV remains a major public health concern, particularly in Mexico, where adolescents aged 15 to 24 are especially vulnerable. In Sinaloa, HIV cases have increased, with 89 new cases reported in 2024. However, many adolescents lack comprehensive sexual education, increasing their risk of infection. This descriptive and cross-sectional study aims to analyze HIV knowledge and sexual attitudes among adolescents in northern Mexico. Methodology: A random sample of 184 adolescents was selected from a population of 842 students. Participants completed two surveys: the HIV and Other STIs Knowledge Scale (ECI) and an attitude survey. Results: The results were classified into three levels: low, medium, and high knowledge. The instruments showed adequate reliability, with Cronbach's alpha values of 0.88 and 0.66, respectively. The findings indicated a medium level of knowledge, highlighting the vulnerability of this group to sexually transmitted infections. Conclusions: The study concludes that it is crucial to implement awareness campaigns and promote comprehensive sexual education to reduce transmission risks.
